Mundgee – Murray Cod on the Bullawah Trail. It was funded by Regional Development Victoria’s Putting Locals First Program, the Department of Transport, Planning and Local Infrastructure, North East Catchment Management Authority and the Rural City of Wangaratta.

Bullawah Cultural Trail

Marmungan Rock is a valued part of the Bullawah Cultural Trail. The Bullawah Cultural Trail represents the valued partnership between the Rural City of Wangaratta and the Wangaratta Local Aboriginal Network. This network is known locally as the Dirrawarra Local Indigenous Network.

Good Practice

The Wangaratta Shire Council reported the following good practices in their response to the 2012 Victorian Local Government Aboriginal Engagement and Reconciliation Survey and subsequent updates.

  • Flies the Aboriginal flag permanently
  • Flies the Torres Strait Islander flag on special occasions
  • Engages with Traditional Owners
  • Acknowledges Country
  • Arranges Welcome to Country
  • Uses Aboriginal language to name projects or places
  • Has an Aboriginal Advisory Committee or similar structure
  • Engages with local Aboriginal organisations
  • Engages with Local Indigenous Networks
  • Has a general Employment policy that encourages employment of Aboriginal people
  • Provides cross-cultural awareness training for staff and/or councillors
  • Includes Indigenous specific commitments in Council strategic documents
  • Has a documented Aboriginal history of the municipality
  • Organises Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Council Awards
  • Recognises local Aboriginal historical events
  • Provides support for Aboriginal art and culture
  • Has facilitated the use of Aboriginal language to name sites
  • Includes Aboriginal content in whole of community events and organises NAIDOC activities
  • Supports or organises events that celebrate Aboriginal culture
  • Has worked with RAP to protect local significant sites.
  • Library has Indigenous specific programs
  • Has Indigenous-specific HACC services
  • Involves Indigenous young people in programs
