GOOD PRACTICE

The City of Boroondara reported the following good practices in their response to the 2012 Victorian Local Government Aboriginal Engagement and Reconciliation Survey and subsequent updates.

  • Adopted the Boroondara Reconciliation Strategy 2022-26.
  • Includes Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander specific commitment in Council’s key strategic document, the Boroondara Community Plan 2021-31.
  • Convenes an internal Boroondara Reconciliation Advisory Committee.
  • Permanently flies the Aboriginal flag at the Camberwell Civic Centre and Kew Library.
  • Engages regularly with the Traditional Owners. Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation.
  • Developed an internal protocol for giving an Acknowledgement of Traditional Owners at internal and external meetings and events.
  • Includes an Acknowledgement of Traditional Owners on all staff email blocks and Council’s website.
  • Arranges Welcome to Country for Council events.
  • Provides Aboriginal cultural awareness sessions for staff and the community.
  • Engages with the Local Reconciliation Group.
  • Committed to building greater community awareness of the Traditional Owners and Registered Aboriginal Party, Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation
  • Programs Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists in the Boroondara Arts and Library Programs, public spaces, Council owned facilities and at cultural events.
  • Committed to establishing and strengthening relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stakeholders and peoples and identifying opportunities for collaboration
  • Identifies opportunities for collaboration with community groups and services providers, networks and local schools to progress reconciliation initiatives locally.
  • Acknowledge and/or celebrate dates of significance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • Acknowledge the Traditional Owners, Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation, within Council and across the municipality
  • Acknowledge and celebrate local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories, histories, cultures and peoples.
