GOOD PRACTICE

Mildura Rural Council reported the following good practices in their response to the 2012 Victorian Local Government Aboriginal Engagement and Reconciliation Survey and subsequent updates.

In 2023 Mildura Rural Council will be launching its third Reconciliation Action Plan. Some of the enduring positive practices of Mildura Council include:

  • Flies both flags permanently in Council Chambers and above the Town Hall
  • Engaging regularly with Traditional Owners
  • Acknowledges Country
  • Arranges Welcome to Country
  • Having an Ngiwa Yarna Commitee (Aboriginal Advisory Committee of council)
  • Partnering with local Aboriginal organisations  
  • Participating in Local Indigenous Networks
  • Employs Aboriginal staff and actively working     to increase employment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in     all levels of the organisation
  • Provides cross cultural awareness training to staff and/or Councillors
  • Including Aboriginal specific commitments in Council strategic documents
  • Provides support for Aboriginal arts and culture
  • Supports or organises events that celebrate Aboriginal culture, in recent years holding an annual, signature “Corroboree” event
  • Works with Registered Aboriginal Parties to protect local significant sites
  • Involves Aboriginal young people in programs
  • Works with local agencies to support Aboriginal young people
